WhatsApp to get password-protected, encrypted chat backups soon

WhatsApp chats are now secured and also encrypted and the app itself can be locked with a password, but we know that its cloud backups are not encrypted or protected, especially when backed up to Google Drive. WhatsApp also wants to change that and is also reportedly working to increase the security of its cloud backups by adding a password protection feature that will encrypt the chat backups. This will make these backups accessible to the user only.

According to a WABetaInfo report, this new feature is active and reported last year. Now, WABetaInfo has shared some screenshots showing how this can be done on WhatsApp on iOS and Android.

One of the screenshots states that in order to prevent unauthorized access to your, one can set a password that will be used to encrypt future backups. This password will also be needed when you need to restore from backup – read another. The app will ask the user to verify his or her phone number and choose a password that is at least eight characters long.

Another reads that this password will be needed when you restore from backup. The app will ask the user to verify his or her phone number and choose a password that is at least eight characters long. Another screenshot adds that WhatsApp will also not be able to help recover forgotten passwords.

WhatsApp has warned all users earlier that while conversations are encrypted to an end-to-end, this protection does not extend to online backups on Google Drive and iCloud. When conversations are backed up in the cloud, the security of these depends on the cloud service providers. There have been cases in the past when these backup chats have been made accessible to legal authorities with valid search credentials.

When a new WhatsApp feature is introduced, password-backed backups should prevent anyone from accessing your conversations without your permission.

The latest details about this ongoing project come as WhatsApp’s reputation has taken a toll on its new privacy policy which many believe believes WhatsApp can store more information via Facebook and share conversations with Facebook.

WhatsApp has openly tried to clear the air and has tried to tell users that the new policy does not affect the security of personal messages that are always encrypted at the end. However, this has given other apps like Signal and Telegram the opportunity to change their privacy features and find users.

While WhatsApp has not said anything about this feature yet, WABetaInfo has a good track record of getting things done before they are legal so they may also be fine.
