Trump signs for the Gandhi-King Initiative

The U.S President Donald Trump has now signed into a law the which is for the Gandhi-King Scholarly Exchange Initiative. This is one among the other things that makes a way for establishing and making an educational forum between the two countries and that will be America and India. This forum will be made to study the work and legacies of the two great men in the past and their great work and ideologies. It is made to study the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi- an Indian whose work and principles are praised worldwide and also Martin Luther King Jr.

This is written by the civil rights icon who is John Lewis, he died early during this year, and it will also be co-sponsored by Indian-American Congressman who is Ami Bera. The new law gives official permission to USD one million a year through the fiscal year 2025 for the new initiative which is named as the Gandhi-King Scholarly Exchange Initiative.

It has also officially given the permission for USD 2 million for the Gandhi-King Global Academy only for the year 2021, and also of USD30 million for the Gandhi – King Development Foundation for the FY 2021.

The new law has also given official permissions and the authorises to United States Agency for International Development which is known as the USAID, in order to establish a US-India development foundation. This foundation would give the borrowed money to the Indian private sector in order to address the development priorities in India.

The development foundation would also receive an amount of  USD 15 million every year, starting from 2022 and that will go on till the year 2025. But that will be only if the private sector of India binds to match with the US government contributions. The Congressional Budget Office which is known as the CBO has estimated and said that the bill would cost for around USD51 million over the five years.

In the year 2009, late Congressman who was John Lewis had made a congressional delegation visit to India. He had made the visit to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Dr King’s pilgrimage to India.

After getting inspired by his visit, the Congressman Lewis has now created the Gandhi-King Exchange Act in order seek and apply the philosophies of the great leaders like Gandhi and Dr King Jr and also to conflict the resolution efforts and the current policy challenges.

This act that they have taken the initiative about among other many things also gives the authorisation to the State Department, to be in cooperation with the Indian government in order to establish an annual educational forum for the scholars that are from both the countries. The countries that focuses on the great legacies of the leaders Gandhi and Dr King Jr.

It also given permission and authorises an initiative to develop a professional development training on conflict resolution that will be based on the principles of nonviolence – the principle that was used by Mahatma Gandhi and to also establish a foundation that will help to address the social, environmental, and health priorities in India.
