In a bid to recapture All India’s Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) who ousted her, VK Sasikala, a key aide to former prime minister J Jayalalithaa, will look into legal action against the 2017 Electoral Commission (EC) allocation of party names and a two-leaf icon in the current government -AIADMK.
“We will apply for medical treatment soon,” said his lawyer Raja Senthoor Pandian. “At this stage we have not opened a case against him and we are expecting him to be released in August and pardoned. So we thought about installing it when he left. We need to talk. ”
The EC, on November 23, 2017, handed over the sign to the government led by Prime Minister Edappadi Palaniswami after briefly chanting it after both sides clashed after Jayalalithaa’s death in December 2016. Sikala and his nephew TTV Dhinakaran challenged it in Delhi high court, which in 2019, maintained the EC decision. The Supreme Court also rejected the following two applications – March 2019 and July 2020.
Sikasikala will return to Chennai after completing a church split in Bengaluru. On Sunday, he was discharged from Victoria Hospital where he was treated for a serious Covid-19 infection. Delivering his first political message, Sasikala left the hospital in a car carrying the AIADMK flag. He was admitted to hospital a week before his release from prison on January 27 on an unequal property charge in which Jayalalithaa was also charged.
AIADMK, which fired Sasikala and Dinhranan on September 12, 2017, has convicted him of using a flag, setting it as illegal. Justice Minister CV Shunmugam has warned of the crackdown on “Sasikala and anyone” who is not a member of the party and “abuses the flag”.
But Dinakaran has excused his move by saying he is the party’s secretary general. Dinakaran, an independent member of the Legislature, is floating on Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) with a group of Sasikala supporters who want to unite them by bringing back the AIADMK.
Palaniswami, the caretaker Prime Minister of the AIADMK-led NAD coalition for the April-May elections, has made it clear that Sasikala will not be reinstated.
Sikasikala briefly took over the reins of the party following the death of Jayalalithaa between a power struggle and a faithful O Paneerselvam convert. He elected Palaniswami as prime minister before committing to prison but later met with Paneerselvam.
After his dismissal, AIADMK created new posts in their rules with Paneerselvam as a consultant and Palaniswami became a joint consultant with Jayalalithaa as the “Permanent Secretary Permanent”.
Sasikala has challenged the matter in the Madras High Court. AIADMK fired party leaders who posted placards welcoming Sikasikala after his release. “He could get more supporters but the AIADMK situation will continue,” said political analyst Ravindran Duraisamy. “The current AIADMK is contesting the parliamentary elections and the 2019 by-elections with a brand and name without hindrance. It is a resolved issue. ”
