Redemption beckons for Vettel after miserable end at Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel feels confident about his new Formula One career with Aston Martin after opening this page last season with Ferrari.
Things went awry and worsened for four F1 champions by 2020.
He had one end of the podium and finished 10 of 17 competitions out of the top 10 last season when the situation was tense because Ferrari did not give him a new contract.
“The whole year has been a challenge. Obviously I’m not happy with how the past year has gone in terms of performance, in terms of my performance,” he said.
He said that there are things that went wrong and things that he would have liked to have gone differently. It’s no secret that in stages he wasn’t my greatest joy.
Last year the favor of Vettel fell sharply, and his hopes were shattered after losing the 2017 and 2018 titles to Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, despite leading both competitions in the middle division.
The driver who shares the F1 record with Michael Schumacher has won the most of the season – 13 with Red Bull in 2013 – and has won 53 out of his 121 points he earned surpassed his team-mate Charles Leclerc in 2019 and 2020.
When Leclerc was offered a lucrative new contract in 2024 – and Vettel was not offered a single one – it became clear who was considered No. 1 in the team. The tension lines grew deeper in Vettel’s face as they finished the last three races of 2020 with 13, 12 and 14.
Vettel said that it wasn’t at his level. He also said that he never really cared what people thought or said, or wrote.
That’s why it’s important that he have peace with himself very, very much expected of him.
He even considered retiring but the move to Aston Martin aroused the enthusiasm of the 33-year-old German driver.
He said that he is not too old, there are also other older drivers returning to the grid, referring to 39-year-old Fernando Alonso.
He said that he don’t think that’s an old thing, He think it’s a question of whether you have a team and a car around you.
The Aston Martin team runs on Mercedes engines and it is run by a Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, whose son Lance Stroll is another team driver.
The aim is to make Aston Martin an award winner within three to five years.
Vettel suggested that the Aston Martin atmosphere was less intense than when it was in the Ferrari power station. The Italian manufacturer with its bright red car remains the most famous name in F1 history. But Ferrari has not won a driver’s title since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 and its final builders’ title was ’08.
Vettel said that obviously it’s much smaller (at Aston Martin) compared to Ferrari in the beginning.
He said that the things are very different, but it’s not about good looks or the luxury chairs in the office, it’s about work done in secret.
A new chapter in Vettel’s career begins on Sunday at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
