Ravi Shastri takes the place of Ajinkya Rahane. So can you remember the last time when the captain of a cricket team was absent in the post-match press conference that was held after a famous win?
You might think that this is indeed a really difficult question to answer and that is just because this happens so rarely. Still, Ajinkya Rahane on the day of his greatest triumph that took place in the career of his sporting, this was the day when he engineered the improbable, and that had lead India to get a victory in the second Test. This was soon after the team had been left broken in their worst ever Test debacle that happened in the series opener.
Rahane did not just lead the team with that was without its batsman in Virat Kohli and also without its two main bowlers that were Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami, also a team that had two new players playing for the game. He was also the Man of the Match, he with a battling of 112 who top-scored in the Test will now go down as one of the great batting performances that happened in the game.
But we never got to hear anything from him. We also did not get any kinds of thoughts that he had nor we heard about his plans that he made to bring Australia down in first place or how he paired Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin to turn the rings in front of Steve Smith and the Australian team.
Instead of all these, we had Ravi Shastri as the coach. If this was a game like that of football where the coach is presenting his point of view at the end of a memorable triumph. If we are talking about football, then the coach is the face of the team, also the coach is the chief strategist and also the man who makes all the kinds of decisions.
Whereas if we are talking about cricket then the opposite is true for it, where it is the captain who is standing out there in the middle, the captian is the one who steers the team through the game and also he is the onw who makes the small and big decisions and then executes the plans that will lead to whatever outcome that comes out.
There can only be one excuse that Rahane was unwell and that was the reason that the coach was speaking to the press instead of the captain.
But we people were not able to see any signs of it at the time that he spent on the field, or at the time when he walked up to the mic after the match presentation.
Ravi has been constantly seen and has marked his presence at the press conferences all the time when India win. On such occasions and also in many others, Shastri along with the captain Virat Kohli was seen.
The only other time when a captain was not present in the press was during the India’s tour to Australia in the year 2011-12, it was a time when India lost all the four matches. It was a tour where both Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman had got retirement, this was the only time when the captain Dhoni did not attend the press conferences and instead of him he had sent a debutant who was R Ashwin.
