Iran builds at underground nuclear facility amid US tensions

The country Iran has now begun the construction on a site at its underground nuclear facility at Fordo. It began the construction amid the tensions which is going on with the US over its atomic programme and satellite photos that are obtained on 18th December, Friday by The Associated Press show.

Iran has not publicly recognized any new construction at Fordo, the onw whose discovery was done by the West in the year 2009 and that it came in an earlier round of brinkmanship even before the world powers struck the nuclear deal of the year 2015 with Tehran.

The purpose of the building remains unclear right now, any work that will happen at Fordo will trigger new concern in the days of the Trump administration that was before the inauguration of new and recent President-elect Joe Biden.  Iran is already building at its Natanz nuclear facility after a mysterious explosion took place in July there. This explosion was described as a sabotage attack by Tehran.

Jeffrey Lewis who is an expert at the James Martin Center said that any changes at this site will be carefully watched as a sign of where Iran’s nuclear programme is headed. Iran did not immediately respond to a request for comment to the US Nation. The inspectors of International Atomic Energy Agency are in Iran as part of the nuclear deal. The IAEA for now has not publicly disclosed if Iran informed it for any kind of construction at Fordo.

Construction on the Fordo site began during the late September in this year. Satellite images were obtained from Maxar Technologies by the AP. It shows that the construction is taking place at a northwest corner of the site. It is near the holy Shiite city of Qom which is about 90 kilometers southwest of Tehran.
The satellite photo on 11th December showed what appeared to be as a dug foundation for a building with dozens of pillars. Such kind of pillars can be used in construction in order to support the buildings in earthquake prone zones.

The construction site is at the northwest of Fordo’s underground facility. It is built deep inside a mountain for protecting it from potential airstrikes. The site is near the research-and-development buildings at Fordo.
Trump in the year 2018 withdrew the U.S. from Iran’s nuclear deal without the agreement of others. Tehran had agreed to limit its uranium enrichment but in the exchange of lifting their economic sanctions. When the U.S. drived up the sanctions, Iran publicly abandoned the deal’s limits as a series of escalating incidents that pushed the two countries to the edge of war at the beginning of the year. Although, the tensions still remain high.

Iran agreed to stop improving and enhancing  uranium at Fordo and instead make it a nuclear, physics and technology center under the nuclear deal that happened in 2015. Lewis said that the location was a major sticking point in the negotiations leading to the Iran nuclear deal. He also said that the U.S. insisted Iran close it while Iran’s supreme leader said continuing it was a red line. Since the deal got collapsed, Iran has resumed the enrichment there.

Experts say that Iran now has enough low-enriched uranium which is got piled up for at least two nuclear weapons, if they choses to pursue them. They also said that Iran has maintained its nuclear programme is peaceful.

The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani opposed the bill. But the country’s Guardian Council later tweaked and approved it. The bill attempts to pressure the European nations to provide relief from the U.S. sanctions.
In that period of time, an Iranian scientist who created its military nuclear programme which was around two decades ago recently was killed in a shooting that happened outside of Tehran. Iran has blamed Israel suspecting of killing Iranian nuclear scientists over the last decade, for the attack. Israel has yet not commented on the attack.
