iPhone to iCar: Apple car may hit roads by 2024

Apple Inc is fasting forward and taking a step ahead in technology. They now have further plans and  is coming up with self-driving car technology and it is targeted to arrive by 2024 and to produce a passenger vehicle that would include its own breakthrough battery technology.

The automotive efforts of the iPhone maker’s that was known by the name Project Titan. This project have proceeded without any ups and downs since the year 2014 when it first started to design its own vehicle and that too from scratch. There was a point where Apple drew back the effort in order to focus on the software and it reassessed its goals. Doug Field had previously worked at Tesla Inc, he had returned to oversee the project in 2018 and he laid off around 190 people from the team in the year 2019.

Since after that, Apple has progressed a lot and it now targets to build a vehicle for it’s consumers. Two people who are familiar with the effort said that it won’t be named because Apple’s plans are not public. Their goal is of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts. Also they are having their rivals with another company named Alphabet Inc’s Waymo, who has built robo-taxis to carry the passengers for a driverless ride-hailing service.

According to a third person who has seen the design of the Apple Battery said that the Central to Apple’s strategy is a new battery design that could reduce the cost of batteries and hence increase the vehicle’s range. Although the company had declined to comment on its plans or any of it’s future products.

Making a vehicle will be needing for a supply chain with a lot of parts and different tools to be imported even for the company like this pne which makes hundreds of millions of electronic products every year, but they have not  made a car till now. It took around 17 years for Elon Musk’s Tesla before it finally turned a sustained profit in making the cars.

A person who worked on the project Titan said that If there is one company on the planet that has the resources to make this possible than it’s probably Apple. But at the same time he said that it’s not a cell phone.

It remains unclear about whether the company will be assembling the Apple-branded car by itself or they will be involving some other company, but the sources have said that they expect the company to depend on a manufacturing partner in order to build the vehicles.

Two people who know about the plans of the Apple said that there can be delays in the plans because of the COVID could push the start of production to the year 2025 or even after that.

Apple has decided to take and involve outside partners for elements of the system.

Apple’s car might feature multiple sensors for scanning different distances. That person said that some sensors could also get from the Apple’s internally developed lidar units. Although, Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro models which got released this year both feature lidar sensors.

Hal Eddins is the chief economist at Apple shareholder Capital Investment Counsel. He said that Apple has a history of higher margins than most of the automakers has ever had.

Eddins said that he Still doesn’t really see the appeal of the car business, but Apple may be looking out for another angle than what he is seeing.
