India approves home test for Covid-19, to cost ₹250 per kit

India approved on Wednesday the first Covid-19 home trial, which allows people to purchase a kit costing ₹ 250 and delivering results within 15 minutes.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said The kit which is developed by the Pune-based Mylab Discovery Solutions Ltd, is a quick antigen test (RAT) that should only be used by those with Covid-19 symptoms or who have a close relationship with an infected person,.

“Testing impartially is not advisable. All people who are tested for it can be considered as good indeed and do not need repeated testing. All people living with HIV are advised to adhere to isolation and home-based care in accordance with the ICMR and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare protocol, ”reads the ICMR statement.

Rapid antigen testing is rarely more sensitive than laboratory-based RT-PCR tests, which means they may lead to other side effects, although experts believe their accuracy decreases when viral load is high – a point where it is possible and contagious.

ICMR Director-General, Dr Balram Bhargava, at one of the recent media briefings on Covid, announced that the council is looking at home-based Covid-19 testing solutions.

Hasmukh Rawal who is the chief executive of Myylab Discovery Solutions said that he test kit will be available on the market in about a week. It took us about five months to find the right product. We have rated it at ₹ 250 per tax inclusive kit. The kit is designed to be very easy to use and is not biohazard. There is a disposal bag that also helps dispose of items safely after use.

“Reliable testing will take approximately 5 to 7 minutes, and negative results will take 15 minutes longer,” he added.

The bag comes with a fully stocked tube, a sterile mouth swab, a single test card, and a biohazard bag. The person performing this test will have to download the app on his mobile phone.

They say to put a swab in the nose on both noses until it is 2 to 4 cm or until resistance is met. Roll a whisk five times inside both of your nostrils. Dip a fork into the pre-filled tube and break off the remaining swab; close the cap cap. On the test card enter two drops in a row by pressing the tube and wait 15 minutes for the results. Any result that takes more than 20 minutes to appear is considered invalid.

There will be two sections on the test card – the control phase and the test phase. If the bar appears only in the control section ‘C’, the result is the same, and if the bar appears in the control and test (T) section, antigen is detected and testing is detected.

The manual adds that people will need to insert the card under the mobile camera and the app will read the test and upload the report accordingly.

Experts say that these home-based tests are useful when detecting a pattern of runaway infection.

Dr GC Khilnani, former head, Department of Pulmonology, AIIMS, Delhi said that these tests are used in developed countries such as the US and the UK. Since these tests have high specificity, they can be used in areas where the height is high so that it can detect cases early. The good cases of using RAT in particular are of real benefit.

The UK offers its citizens two free home exams to promote routine exams for early detection of cases.
