Dattatreya Hosabale, the second Kannadiga to occupy No 2 position in RSS after H V Seshadri

With his election as Sarkaryavah (secretary general) on Saturday, Dattatreya Hosabale became the second Kannadiga to take the No. 2 position in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parent body of the BJP, the country’s ruling party.

UH V Seshadri was another Kannadiga, who had replaced Sarkaryavah for nine years since 1987.

Hosabale, a former Sah-Sarkaryavah (joint secretary general) of Sangh since 2009 was elected as Sarkaryavah at the annual two-day annual meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS), the Sangh decision-making body that started here on Friday.

He is best known with the name ofof  Datta ji in RSS circles, born December 1, 1954 by Hosabale Sheshagiriyappa and Meenakshamma.

From a family of the RSS activists which came from the small village Hosabale of Soraba Taluk in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

The first school he attended was in his hometown of Hosabale and Sagar. He later moved to Bangaluru to do his college studies and joined National College.

Hosabale then obtained books and obtained his degree in English Literature from the University of Bangaluru.

He joined RSS in 1968 and became a student organization ABVP in 1972.

Hosabale was detained for more than a year under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during a campaign to restore democracy to the Emergency Situations set by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Hosabale, then a youth activist, is said to have been the first to inform the likes of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, SN Mishra and Madhu Dandavate of the state of emergency during a meeting that was held in Bengaluru on the morning of 26th June in the year 1975.

He became a full-time employee of ABVP in 1978 and became its secretary for national planning for 15 years with his headquarters in Mumbai.

Hosabale has also played a significant role in establishing a youth development center in Guwahati which is in Assam and the World Organization of Student and Youth (WOSY).

The founding founder of ‘Aseema’, from Kannada every month, became Sah-Baudhik Pramukh (second in charge of the RSS intelligence unit) in 2004.

Hosabale is said to be able to read Kannada, Hindi, English, Tamil, and Sanskrit. He also called the ball a symbol of world unity.

Interestingly, Hosabale was selected as Sarkaryavah at ABPS held in his home country of Karnataka.

Although ABPS is held at various locations every year, every third year it is held at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur in the Sarkaryavah elections, but it was transferred to Bengaluru this time after the Covid-19 trial in Maharashtra.

According to sources, Hosabale has good relations with the main BJP party and the government including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, and he is a good fit for the job by having good cooperation.

They also said his extensive experience in ABVP, the youth wing and the North East would help the organization grow.
