Alabama Leading US in COVID-19 Death Rate Over Last Week

(AP) MONTGOMERY, Ala. — According to numbers released Thursday, Alabama has averaged more than 100 deaths per day from COVID-19 over the last week, making it the state with the highest death ratio in the country during that period, even as hospitalizations connected to the coronavirus pandemic continue to fall.

According to Johns Hopkins University statistics, 106 deaths were recorded statewide every day in the last seven days, however, some may have occurred earlier due to a reporting lag. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alabama’s rate of 18 deaths per 100,000 people in the recent week is significantly higher than second-placed West Virginia’s average of 10 deaths per 100,000 people.

The rise in deaths comes as the number of individuals admitted to hospitals in the state dipped below 1,800 for the first time in a month, a development that health officials attribute to both people getting well and dying.

In a statement released Thursday, Dr. Scott Harris, the director of the Alabama Department of Public Health, said, “Increasing immunization rates remain crucial to minimize incidences of COVID-19.”
