RJD MP writes to Piyush Goyal over contract termination of IRCTC employees

RJD MP writes to Piyush Goyal over contract termination of IRCTC employees. Rashtriya Janata Dal Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha on Friday during this week wrote to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal asking about the non-renewal of contracts for Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) tour operators’ contracts. This came after workers went on social media, saying they had been asked to leave.

“These contract workers have done their best for Indian Railways even during the Covid-19 era. They were involved in the management and administration of food delivery services on special Sramram trains run by Indian Railways, ”Jha said in his letter.

He said he was writing on behalf of the IRCTC staff on April 23, 2019, to oversee cooking services, inspection of high-quality trains as well as railway cooking facilities.

“We are shocked. I have been informed by these staff members that they have been told by the IRCTC officials to look for new jobs and that after 20 days they will no longer be part of the project. A weak argument from the IRCTC is that they are employed on a two-year contract.” book.

“We all know that the hotel industry is among the most affected during the Covid crisis, so it is unthinkable that they could be hired by the hotel industry in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. I remember during my intervention in the parliamentary budget process, he made it clear that no one would be fired. I sincerely ask you to look into this matter with the utmost urgency and keep the duties of the hundreds of hospitality managers working with the IRCTC, ”said Jha.

One of the contract workers, who did not want to be named, said their bosses had given them verbal instructions to look for a new job this month. He said that on April 23, many managers will terminate their contracts. They have even written letters to the prime minister and the railway minister to intervene in this matter.

An IRCTC spokesperson said that currently, catering services on special trains are limited to the sale of ready-to-eat food, mixed drinking water, tea / coffee, etc. Basic kitchens do not work. The scope of the hospitality manager’s role is very small. With regard to the duration of the contracts of these hospitality directors, action is taken in terms of the terms and conditions of the contract.

This comes in the wake of a decision taken by the national transport service provider in June last year when it decided to terminate the contract of more than 500 contract workers. However, its board could reconsider the decision, reports HT on June 30

In a letter to all railway stations dated June 25, the IRCTC informed all its local offices that there was no need for these contract workers under the current circumstances and that they should be given one month’s notice. The IRCTC said, that the decision to terminate the contracts is currently under consideration.

Just a day later, the IRCTC said it had decided to suspend its order to suspend the operation of more than 500 thousand services after the termination of their contracts following an altercation on social media. Several contract workers who were given a letter of resignation went on social media seeking the intervention of railway minister Piyush Goyal.

About 560 managers (travelers) were hired by the IRCTC in 2019 on a two-year contract to keep a standard check for contractors assigned to cater for food on helicopter trains.
